Lady Caught at Wrong End?

Everything is not fine these days with Manipur, simply because the abductions of the school students by the militants had brought some harrowing moment for the parents. As if that wasn’t enough, Manipur was yet again in the national news for wrong reasons.

This time it involved the failed dope test on weightlifter Laishram Monika Devi prompting the officials to pull her out of the Beijing Olympic. This has forced her well wishers to smell a foul play and a deliberate attempt by unseen ‘forces’ who want to malign the athletics from North East.

“This entire episode is nothing but a conspiracy against my daughter to promote someone else. We want the test to be confirmed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and request the authorities to repeat the test at the doping test facility in Beijing,”

Monika’s father L. Nabachandra Singh said.

The gravity of the allegations can be gauged from the fact that Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has promised to take the matter to New Delhi to make sure truth prevails and such step motherly treatment to sportsman from north-east is stopped outright.

It won’t be out of context to mention the achievements of this prodigy. She was the only woman athletic who was selected in the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF). To her credit she has the distinction of getting a silver medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006.
